YUPO DEMO in Lima for LAWS (Lima Area Watercolor Society)
Recently, I had the pleasure of demonstrating painting with watercolor on YUPO for LAWS. It was fun meeting everyone; however I was sorry to have missed Annabelle Vandemark, the founder of this nice group of painters.
In the video below, I am demonstrating and discussing how I first used thin layers of acrylic inks to paint the figures. After these inks dried, they became resistant to subsequent applications of watercolor. I essentially could paint directly on top of this acrylic, but it would not stick or stay there. The yellow watercolor will stay on the surrounding areas.
Typically, watercolor pigments are initially very bright upon application to YUPO; however, with specific texturing techniques, one can "quiet" areas that appear too bright. Presently, the rock on the upper right has been quieted with the use of a housepainter roller and some detailed lifting of the lighter areas of the rock. The background areas (trees, etc.) are still too bright and will be softened as this painting is developed. I will, however, leave the foreground bright to bring a nice depth to this painting.
In this photo above, I am answering one of many, many questions. Always the teacher, I enjoy providing information along with my demonstrations. I often study pigments and paper qualities, so I love to pass along what I have learned. New developments in pigments are forever challenging the true water-media artist. I will always be thankful for a workshop I had with Stephen Quiller several years ago. Stephen Quiller, a master of color, has released his newest publication: Watermedia Painting with Stephen Quiller and can be purchased here.
